the matte black finish works with a dress but does not look too formal with jeans. the lock turns cleanly and the hardware has stayed even after several dinners out. my previous embossed bag felt shiny and stiff, while this surface has more depth and the handles are easier to hold. it carries my phone, card case and compact without changing shape. i would choose this finish again for an evening bag that still gets regular use.
